-
Does my child has to know more than one language to study abroad?
Students don't need to know another language to study abroad. Many of our programs offer courses in English. Students can also study in an English speaking country such as the United Kingdom, Ireland or Australia.
-
Which majors can study abroad?
Any students can participate in an Education Abroad program. Some TXST study abroad programs offer Core Curriculum courses making it accessible to all students. There are also many more options pertaining to every major and minor.
-
Will study abroad delay my child's graduation?
Many students study abroad and still graduate in four years. Students earn credits toward graduation requirement while abroad. As long as a student plans ahead, there is no reason studying abroad for a summer, a semester or a longer would delay graduation. With proper approval, credits taking abroad can satisfy major, minor, or general education requirements. The earlier students start planning, the easier it becomes to fit studying abroad into their academic schedule and make sure they meet all the requirements.
-
Is studying abroad safe?
The safety of TXST students is our top priority. Approved locations for Education Abroad programs must have a travel advisory level 1 or level 2 issued by the Department of State.
Texas State University monitors information relevant to the safety of its Education Abroad students, faculty, and staff as they safety and security is of the utmost importance.
Education Abroad works closely with On Call International – an international travel assistance provider and an outstanding source of international health and safety information. In addition, Education Abroad monitors health and safety information around the world that are issued by the U.S. Department of State, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention among others.
If a U.S. citizen, we encourage students to register their travel plans with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrolls a traveler’s itinerary with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, sends travelers health and security updates for the countries they are traveling to, as well as helps friends and family to contact travelers in case of an emergency. -
Is the application process difficult?
At TXST we provide students all the support they need to start their application process. We are here to help students choose a program right for them and answer any questions along the way.
-
Is study abroad affordable?
The cost varies depending on the type and location of the program! Studying Abroad can be more accessible than often perceived, with various options available to manage and reduce cost. Scholarships, grants, and financial aid can also reduce costs and make the experience accessible.
-
Can my child use their financial aid or scholarship if they go abroad?
In most cases, your student's financial aid or scholarships travel with them. However, every student's financial situation is different, and we encourage students to contact the Office of Financial aid and Scholarships for personalized guidance.
-
Do my child needs to know where they want to go?
No, but students are encouraged to know which courses they would like to take abroad so we can identify a program relevant to their academic goals.
-
Are there scholarships available?
We offer several scholarships that are available on the Scholarships opportunities webpage.
-
What are the next steps?
We encourage students to attend a General Information Session, explore programs, and consider scheduling an advising appointment based on their program interests. Meeting with their academic advisors is also highly encouraged to determine the best courses to take abroad. Prior planning is critical, and students should start preparing about a year in advance of their program departure.
